Orthodontic Retainers - Post-Treatment Care

Post-Treatment Care

Maintaining your perfectly straight smile is our number one priority after orthodontic treatment. Once your braces have been removed or you have completed the Invisalign treatment, we will generally recommend orthodontic retainers to maintain the alignment of your teeth. These can be fixed or removable appliances and they form an important part of post-treatment care in almost all cases of orthodontic treatment.

Why Do I Need to Wear Retainers?

When worn properly, retainers are the key to maintaining the excellent results achieved through your orthodontic treatment at Tony Weir Orthodontics. In fact, retainers are so important that they should be worn consistently for as long as you possibly can.

If you are fitted with removable retainers, we will instruct you on when and how to wear your retainer for the most effective results. Initially, you may need to wear your retainer constantly, while over time, you may only have to wear it while you sleep or every few nights.

Types of Retainers

Retainers can be bonded to your teeth, with the option to keep them there permanently, or they can be removable appliances that must be fitted and worn correctly. Retainers are often created using a mould of the patient’s teeth for accurate results.

  • Bonded retainers – these are discreetly glued to the inside of your teeth with the option for permanent retention
  • Clear retainers – a clear, mouthguard-like retainer that is often used during sleep
  • Plates – a classic retainer that secures the teeth on the upper or lower arches of your mouth
  • Banded retainers – retainers that are glued to the back teeth recommended for patients with specific dental issues

The team at Tony Weir Orthodontics is happy to discuss and recommend the best retainer for you.

Retainer Cleaning and Care

Like any valuable item, your retainers should be treated with care. For patients with removable retainers, it is important that they are always kept in their case when they are not being worn. Never leave them lying around and keep them away from pets and children.

Regular appointments will ensure that your retainers are in good condition and function effectively. If you have concerns about your retainers, you should raise them with your orthodontist as soon as possible.

Removable retainers can be cleaned with a toothbrush and cold water, while a special cleaner may also be recommended in place of toothpaste. Patients with bonded retainers can brush their teeth as normal; however, special floss may also be recommended.
