Frequently Asked Questions
Will I feel any pain during the fitting of braces?
No. We make sure that you are as comfortable as possible. Although you may feel some discomfort, you will not feel any pain. The attachment of braces only involves using a special cement to attach the brackets to the teeth.
Will teeth need to be removed?
If you are experiencing Overcrowding, then we may need to extract a tooth or teeth to make space for the other teeth on the jaw. This is necessary for the treatment to be a success. In most other cases extraction of the teeth is not needed.
How much will braces cost?
This is determined on a case-by-case basis. The severity of the issue and the orthodontic work needed to remedy it is the main factor on cost. The type of braces you choose whether traditional braces, lingual braces or Invisalign will all impact on cost. We will provide you with a detailed quotation for your approval before we commence treatment.
How long will the treatment go on?
The length of treatment can vary from 6 to 30 months. The length of treatment is determined by the joint factors of severity and age. The more severe your case and the older you are the longer your treatment.
Are there any restrictions when it comes to food?
Yes. We advise against eating sticky food, hard candies or chew on ice cubes. Finger biting is not advisable either as it can cause your brackets to get unattached from your teeth.
Will braces affect my speech?
In many cases, yes. However, once your tongue and lips get used to the braces, you will be able to adjust and speak normally again. Braces don’t affect the tone of your voice. A slight lisp may be experienced but disappear after time.
Will it hurt to eat with braces on?
After the first few days of treatment, your teeth will feel a little tender. During this time you may want to stick with soft foods. After 2 to 3 days, you will find all discomfort gone and continue to eat normally again. You may also feel soreness or tenderness when the wires are tightened
What happens if a bracket falls off?
We will simply reattach it. This is not a problem but if this happens, you should call us as soon as you can to get your bracket reattached as soon as possible.
How can I clean my teeth with braces on?
You can clean your teeth by brushing and flossing as normal. However, you do need to pay close attention as it is a lot more difficult to clean your teeth with braces. You will want to use a toothbrush with softer bristles and a smaller head to clean your teeth properly without affecting the integrity of braces.
Will this type of braces hurt?
Like conventional braces, you may feel discomfort or pressure during treatment. This discomfort disappears after 2 to 3 days. You may experience discomfort when you eat solid food, which is why we highly recommend that you eat softer food during that initial period.
How much will Lingual Braces cost?
Lingual Braces require special equipment to install and are typically twice as expensive compared to conventional braces.
What are the main advantages of Lingual Braces from conventional braces?
The main advantage of Lingual Braces is that they cannot be seen in plain sight. Even if you smile, the person in front of you will not see them attached to the back of your teeth instead of on the front as with conventional braces.
Can Lingual Braces be noticed during normal social situations?
No. Even if you give your friend a big smile, they will be unaware that you have Lingual Braces. The only indication may be a slight speech impediment during your first weeks with them.
Will it affect my speech?
You may experience a lisp in your speech during the first few weeks of having Lingual Braces. However, once your tongue gets used to them, you will be able to adjust and speak normally again without the lisp.
Is Invisalign right for me?
Invisalign can be used for orthodontic treatment by almost anyone. It can be used in different orthodontic cases and we highly recommend you contact us first to find out if you qualify.
Will the treatment hurt?
No. You may feel pressure after wearing the aligners, the discomfort is manageable. The pressure means that the aligners are working and is using pressure to move your teeth gently in position. You can remove the aligners at any time.
Are there any restrictions when it comes to food?
Invisalign is removable so there are no restrictions when it comes to eating your favourite food. However, it is important to brush your teeth after eating and before you put your aligners back on.
Is there any special oral hygiene equipment that I need to use to clean my teeth?
You will not need any special oral hygiene equipment except for the kit to clean your Invisalign aligners once a day. Maintain your usual oral health regime throughout the treatment.
How will Invisalign affect my appearance when I’m wearing it?
Invisalign aligners are made with clear plastic. When you wear it, it is virtually invisible.
