What are Braces?
Braces, in whatever form they come in, are essentially “handles” which are fixed to teeth to let us grip the teeth while moving them. Braces are usually connected to each other by wires and sometimes elastic bands.
The wires we use are in the shape we ideally want your teeth to be. The wires are threaded through the brackets and held to them. As the wires try to return to their original shapes, they move teeth.
How do Braces work?
Braces work by gently pressing on your teeth over time and moving them into their desired positions. How long this takes depends upon how far the teeth need to be moved, the age of the patient, the health of the teeth and gums during treatment and individual biology.
Who will benefit most from Braces?
Braces are beneficial to both adults and children alike. The best age for children to begin orthodontic treatment varies depending on their individual needs. However, it is essential that a child has lost all of their baby teeth and that they have been replaced by their secondary teeth, prior to the commencement of treatment. Adult patients may require a longer treatment time, as they have denser bone structure than children; however, the results are just as effective. You are never too old for braces!
Modern Clear (Partially Invisible) Braces
Dr Weir provides clear / tooth coloured braces which are virtually invisible. We use these types of braces for all of our patients’ upper teeth, which are very difficult to detect.
